Ashleigh Love
|
Ashleigh Anne Love was born on September 17, 1990, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was welcomed into the world by her parents, Tammy and Joe, and her older brother, Anthony. A few years later, she became a big sister to her younger brother, Alex.
Ashleigh lived life fully and found joy in spending time with her family and friends. From a young age, she loved baking and playing sports. She was an avid reader of the Harry Potter series and enjoyed board games with friends. She especially loved going to the movies and listening to music, often sharing those experiences with the people closest to her. She also enjoyed cheering on her favorite Milwaukee teams - the Brewers, Bucks, and Green Bay Packers. Throughout high school and after graduating, Ashleigh spent much of her time working at a local Arby’s. For her, it never felt like just a job. She took pride in her work and valued the relationships she built with her coworkers. Ashleigh attended Pius XI High School, where she graduated in 2009 with honors near the top of her class. She was consistently described by her peers as hard-working and kind, someone who made others feel welcome. After graduation, she began exploring potential paths for her future. Ashleigh Love was 19 years old when she was murdered in her family home. |
The Murder
On the night of October 5, 2009, according to statements later given to investigators, Ashleigh Love returned home from her shift at Arby’s. She spent the evening with her family watching a Green Bay Packers game. Later that night, she took a shower and went to bed. By all accounts from her family, nothing about the evening seemed unusual.
At approximately 2:00 AM, an armed intruder entered the Love family home. The intruder made his way to Ashleigh’s bedroom on the second floor and shot her in the face with a shotgun while she lay in bed.
Tammy Love recalls being jolted awake by the sound. As she got out of bed, she heard footsteps outside her room, as if someone was running down the stairs. When she opened her bedroom door, she came face to face with the intruder, who was holding a shotgun.
Frightened, Tammy believed the home was being robbed. She began to scream and pleaded, “Take whatever you want and please leave.” The intruder fled the home moments after the encounter.
Tammy has stated that she believes there may have been a second person involved. She later recalled, “I heard something, like a flash. I could see like somebody else running.” Nothing was taken from the home, leading investigators to quickly move away from burglary as a motive. Instead, investigators have stated that Ashleigh may have been specifically targeted.
Though the intruder wore a bandanna covering the lower half of his face, Tammy described him as a Hispanic male, approximately 20 years old, with an average height and build. He had short, spiked black hair and was wearing a dark zippered jacket or sweater. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of an accomplice.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, individuals connected to Ashleigh were interviewed, and evidence was collected from the home. However, details of that evidence have not been publicly released in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
Ashleigh’s family continues to mourn the loss of their daughter and sister, while holding onto hope that her killer will one day be brought to justice. More than a decade later, the murder of Ashleigh Love remains unsolved.
